Every women can wear dress hats ... even if only as wedding hats. The most common styles with countless variations are the beret, breton, cap, cartwheel, cloche, picture hat, pillbox, toque, and turban. Borrowed from men's hats are the boater, bowler, flat cap, flying helmet, Panama, top hat and trilby. Anyone wearing a dress hat these days is making a fashion statement, denoting a sense of presence and style, virtually unknown on the casual scene. A well chosen hat complements the wearer and should be a natural part of the outfit being worn. The hat should balance the neckline, waistline and hem. An important part in getting an idea of what hat styles suit one is to consider face shapes. Square Face - Wear the hat at a slant or tilt or have the brim asymmetrical. Narrow Face - Avoid tall narrow hats. Try full hats and different size brims. Wide Face - Off-the-face styles, bretons or pillboxes on the back of the head are good. Big Nose - Wear a hat to sit forward on the face. Peaks and brims can be worn to draw attention away from the nose. Round Face - The crown should never be narrower than the face unless the brim is the most prominent feature. Wear big hats and hats with brims at an angle. Heart Shaped Face - Wear hats straight across the brow and hairline. The crown to be the width of the cheekbones at a minimum. Can wear almost any style of hat. For best results, try on dress hats, while wearing the chosen outfit, in front of a full length mirror. Then it's easy to see if "one is wearing the hat or the hat is wearing one".
