Bridal headpieces are a historical symbol of purity and majesty. A bride can choose to " wear the headpiece or let the headpiece wear the bride ".

When considering a headpiece, one must think of one's height, hairstyle, shape of face, wedding dress style, fabric, detailing and colours, presentation and individual taste. For instance, if the gown is heavily beaded or has iridescent touches, the headpiece should carry the same feeling for balance. A headpiece made to go with a particular dress does not necessarily suit the bride because of other considerations mentioned above.

Headpieces are grouped into the following styles:

* Head Bands: The band is centred on the top of the head and is most effective on rounder faces or hairstyles with bangs. A cascade can be added to one or both sides of the band to work well with longer hair. For a fuller look, use flowers and pearls. If less height is desired, lace and other materials are combined.

* Clusters: May be a round grouping of live or artificial flowers. If designed with a veil, the cluster is worn toward the back of the head and can be very effective with long or upswept hair. Without a veil, the cluster is worn above the ear with hair swept back from the side of the face.

* Wedding Hats and Wedding Caps: Bridal hats can be worn with or without a veil. A wide brim hat is for a semi-formal or garden wedding and accents shoulder length hair. A narrower brim is more formal in style and can be elaborately trimmed. The bridal cap is worn slightly to one side or tilted to the back of the head and is excellent for short hair. Bows and poufs can be added to create a more elaborate effect.

* Side Sweeps: This style curves along the side of the face and partly extends over the top of the head, forming a crescent. May be lengthened with a cascade.

* Tiaras: The band is worn on the crown of the head at the front and may be constructed of metal, wire or fabric and decorated with stones, pearls or beads.

* Head Wreaths: The band may circle the forehead or the crown of the head depending on size. At the front, bands in various widths may be straight, curved upward or downward and made with stones, pearls or other materials. A live or artificial floral wreath may be interwoven with ribbons, pearls and other materials.

Within the guidelines of these styles, numerous shapes are also formed. Mathematically, the combinations produced by variations in style, shape, colour and materials run into the millions.
